About the Breed
Origin and History
The Irish Terrier is one of Ireland's oldest terrier breeds; it was used on farms for vermin control, guarding and hunting. Known for its courage and loyalty, it is called the "daredevil", and it also served as a messenger dog in wartime.
Appearance and Coat
It has a medium-sized, athletic and elegant body. Its harsh, wiry, medium-length coat is always solid red, wheaten-red or golden-red; it sheds little and requires regular grooming.
Temperament and Personality
The Irish Terrier is brave, loyal and energetic. It is extremely devoted to its family, gets along well with children and is ready to protect its family. It has typical terrier determination and independence and can be dominant toward other dogs. It is intelligent and trainable.
Care, Exercise and Training
Its wiry coat requires regular brushing and periodic hand stripping; it sheds little. It needs a lot of exercise. Intelligent but independent, it benefits from consistent, reward-based training and early socialization.
Health
It is generally sturdy and hardy. Breed-specific conditions include footpad hardening (hyperkeratosis, DNA test available) and cataracts. Regular check-ups are recommended. The Irish Terrier suits active families looking for a brave, loyal and energetic dog who can make time for training and exercise.
PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
