About the Breed
Origin and History
The Irish Wolfhound is an ancient sighthound bred in Ireland to hunt wolves and large game; it is the tallest dog breed in the world. Throughout history it was the dog of nobles and kings, known for its gentle temperament despite its imposing appearance.
Appearance and Coat
It has a giant, long-legged yet elegant and athletic body. Its harsh, wiry, medium-length coat comes in a variety of colors and requires regular brushing. Standing on its hind legs, it can be taller than a person.
Temperament and Personality
The Irish Wolfhound is gentle, calm and patient; it is known as the "gentle giant". It is devoted to its family, gentle and friendly with children, and not prone to aggression. It is a calm and dignified housemate, but with its sighthound instinct it is fast outdoors.
Care, Exercise and Training
Its wiry coat requires regular brushing. It needs a moderate amount of exercise, but excessive exertion should be avoided during puppyhood for healthy joint development. Its gentle nature responds well to calm, reward-based training; it needs plenty of space.
Health
Due to its giant size, dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), gastric torsion (GDV) and bone cancer (osteosarcoma) are the main concerns; these are the reasons for its short lifespan. Regular heart check-ups are important. The Irish Wolfhound suits families looking for a gentle, calm and giant companion who can provide plenty of space and health monitoring.
PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
