About the Breed
Origin and History
The Italian Greyhound is a miniature sighthound of ancient origin; it became popular in Italy as a companion dog among the nobility. It carries sighthound elegance in a small body and loves speed.
Appearance and Coat
It has a very small, slender, long-legged and graceful body. Its very short, fine and glossy coat sheds very little; it comes in a variety of colors and is extremely easy to care for. It has a fragile, delicate build.
Temperament and Personality
The Italian Greyhound is affectionate, graceful and very people-oriented; it loves cuddling up to its owner and seeking warmth. It is playful and fast, running in short bursts and then preferring to rest. It is sensitive and does not like being left alone.
Care, Exercise and Training
Its short coat requires almost no grooming, but its slender build makes it sensitive to cold, so it may need clothing. It needs a moderate amount of exercise. Because of its fragile legs, it should not be allowed to jump from heights. Its sensitive nature calls for gentle training and patient house training.
Health
Because of its fine bone structure, leg fractures (especially in young dogs) are a significant risk. Dental disease, patellar luxation and progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) may also occur. Like other sighthounds, it may be sensitive to anesthesia. The Italian Greyhound suits people looking for an affectionate, graceful and people-oriented lap dog who can take care of its delicate build.
