About the Breed

Origin and History

The Japanese Bobtail is a natural breed that has existed in Japan for centuries and is known for its short "pom-pom" tail. In Japanese culture it is believed to bring good luck and is considered the inspiration for the famous waving "Maneki-neko" (beckoning cat) figure. The "mi-ke" (tricolor) pattern of red and black on a white background is especially prized.

Appearance and Coat

It has a medium-sized, slender yet muscular and athletic body. Its most distinctive feature is its short, kinked pom-pom tail, which is unique in every individual. There are both shorthaired and longhaired varieties; the coat is silky and sheds little.

Temperament and Personality

The Japanese Bobtail is highly social, intelligent and playful. It is attached to people, can learn to play fetch and walk on a leash, and shows "dog-like" behaviors. It is talkative and makes melodic sounds. It is active, curious and athletic, and it gets along well with children and other animals.

Care and Nutrition

Its silky coat is easy to maintain; brushing once or twice a week is enough. Its real needs are play and interaction. A balanced diet and regular activity support its health.

Health

The Japanese Bobtail is generally a sturdy, resilient breed. An important point: the gene responsible for the short tail works through a different mechanism from the one in the Manx cat and has not been associated with spinal or nerve problems; the breed is therefore considered safe in this respect. It has no known serious breed-specific hereditary disease. Regular veterinary check-ups are recommended.

Who Is It Suitable For?

The Japanese Bobtail is ideal for families, homes with children and active individuals looking for a social, playful and athletic companion.

PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
