About the Breed
Origin and History
The Japanese Chin (Japanese Spaniel) is an elegant companion dog that was prized as a lap dog of the nobility in Japanese and Chinese imperial courts. It has been loved for centuries for its noble manners and charming looks.
Appearance and Coat
It has a small, elegant body, a broad flat (brachycephalic) face and large, expressive eyes. Its silky, straight and long coat is black-and-white or red-and-white; it requires surprisingly little grooming.
Temperament and Personality
The Japanese Chin is elegant, affectionate and cat-like; it loves climbing to high places and washing its face with its paws. It is devoted to its owner, calm and adaptable, and does not bark excessively. It is sensitive and senses its owner's mood. It has a noble, dignified demeanor.
Care, Exercise and Training
Its silky coat is easy to maintain with brushing a few times a week. Little exercise is enough, but care should be taken in extreme heat because of its flat face. Its sensitive nature calls for gentle, reward-based training.
Health
Because of its flat face, brachycephalic breathing problems and heat sensitivity may occur. Patellar luxation, heart murmurs and eye problems may also occur. A cool environment is important. The Japanese Chin suits individuals and families looking for an elegant, calm and affectionate lap dog.
