About the Breed

Origin and History

The Australian Kelpie is a tireless herding dog developed to drive sheep across Australia's vast stations. It is agile enough to run across the backs of the flock and hardy enough to work all day, and it is known for its outstanding intelligence.

Appearance and Coat

It has a medium-sized, athletic and agile body with erect ears. Its short, dense double coat comes in many colors (black, red, fawn); it is easy to care for and sheds little.

Temperament and Personality

The Kelpie is extremely intelligent, energetic and loyal. It is devoted to its owner and constantly needs a "job" and mental stimulation. Because of its strong herding instinct, it tends to herd anything that moves. It is independent yet trainable, alert and resilient.

Care, Exercise and Training

Its short coat is easy to maintain. It has very high exercise and mental stimulation needs; it requires long daily activity and tasks. Thanks to its exceptional intelligence, it adapts superbly to training and is ideal for dog sports.

Health

It is generally extremely hardy and healthy. Hereditary cerebellar abiotrophy (a DNA test is available), progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) and hip dysplasia may occur. Responsible breeding is recommended. The Kelpie suits experienced, active owners looking for a very active, intelligent dog eager to work; it is definitely not suited to a sedentary lifestyle.

PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
