About the Breed

Origin and History

The Khao Manee ("white gem" in Thai) is Thailand's natural white cat breed, dating back centuries. It is considered one of the sacred cats mentioned in ancient Thai manuscripts and prized by the royal family. It is known for its pure white coat and eyes that sparkle like "diamonds".

Appearance and Coat

It has a medium-sized, muscular and well-balanced body. Its most distinctive features are its always pure white short coat and bright eyes; the eyes may be blue, gold, or a different color in each eye (heterochromia) — this "one blue, one gold eye" look is the breed's most iconic trait. Its short coat is silky and easy to care for.

Temperament and Personality

The Khao Manee is social, intelligent and attached to people. It is curious and active, seeks interaction and enjoys communicating with the household. With its communicative nature, it can be quite a "talker". It has an outgoing personality that adapts easily to family life and other animals.

Care and Nutrition

Its short coat is very easy to care for; weekly brushing is enough. Apart from keeping the white coat clean, it has no special requirements. A balanced diet and regular play support its health.

Health

The Khao Manee is generally a sturdy breed, but one hereditary risk associated with the white coat should be noted: the dominant white (W) gene can affect inner ear development, and hereditary hearing loss (deafness) may occur, especially in blue-eyed individuals. In heterochromic individuals, the risk is higher in the ear on the blue-eye side. Hearing testing (BAER) and regular veterinary check-ups are recommended.

Who Is It Suitable For?

The Khao Manee is ideal for individuals and families looking for a social, intelligent and interactive companion. When adopting, it is important to be aware of the possibility of deafness and to provide a safe indoor life for hearing-impaired cats.
