About the Breed

Origin and History

The Korat is one of Thailand's oldest and purest natural breeds; its origins go back centuries to ancient Thai manuscripts. In Thailand it is believed to bring luck and prosperity, and it is traditionally given as a wedding gift. It is known for its silver-tipped blue coat and heart-shaped face.

Appearance and Coat

It has a medium-sized, muscular and surprisingly heavy body. Its most distinctive features are its single-layer blue-gray short coat with silver-tipped hairs, its heart-shaped face and its large, bright green eyes (the eyes turn green as the cat matures). It sheds little and is easy to care for.

Temperament and Personality

The Korat is loyal, intelligent and very attached to people. It forms a strong bond with its owner, seeks attention and has a calm but interactive temperament. It dislikes noise and sudden changes and prefers peaceful environments. It gets along gently with children and other animals.

Care and Nutrition

Its single-layer short coat needs very little grooming; weekly brushing is enough. Because of its calm but interactive nature, attention and play are important. A balanced diet supports its health.

Health

The Korat has two serious, scientifically well-defined hereditary diseases: GM1 and GM2 gangliosidosis, which affect the nervous system and are fatal. Reliable DNA tests are available for these diseases, and responsible breeders always screen their breeding cats; this prevents carrier-to-carrier matings. Thanks to this screening, healthy individuals can be bred with confidence. Regular veterinary check-ups are recommended.

Who Is It Suitable For?

The Korat is ideal for individuals and families looking for a loyal, affectionate and calm companion. When adopting, it is important to make sure the parents have been DNA-tested for GM1/GM2.

PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
