About the Breed

Origin and History

The Kurilian Bobtail is a native breed that developed naturally over centuries on the Kuril Islands between Russia and Japan. It survived the harsh island conditions as a skilled hunter, and its short pom-pom tail became established through natural selection. It is considered a hardy, robust natural breed.

Appearance and Coat

It has a large, muscular and athletic body; its hind legs are longer than its front legs. Its most distinctive feature is its short, kinked pom-pom tail, which is unique in every individual. Both shorthaired and semi-longhaired individuals exist; its water-repellent double coat has adapted to the island climate.

Temperament and Personality

The Kurilian has a loyal, intelligent and balanced temperament. It is attached to its owner yet keeps its independence. Its hunting instinct is strong, and many individuals show an interest in water and even enjoy fishing. With its social, easygoing and calm nature, it adapts well to family life and other animals.

Care and Nutrition

Depending on coat length, brushing once or twice a week is enough. Thanks to its hardy natural constitution, it has no special requirements. Play, climbing space and a balanced diet are recommended to support its active nature.

Health

The Kurilian is a hardy breed shaped by natural selection. An important point: the gene responsible for the short tail is different from the one in the Manx cat and has not been associated with spinal or nerve problems; the breed is therefore considered safe in this respect. It has no known serious breed-specific hereditary disease. Regular veterinary check-ups are recommended.

Who Is It Suitable For?

The Kurilian is ideal for individuals and families looking for a hardy, loyal and active companion. With its love of water and athleticism, it is a fascinating, easygoing housemate.
