About the Breed
Origin and History
The Kuvasz is a large, white guardian dog bred in Hungary to protect flocks and guard the estates of the nobility. Over the centuries it developed into a brave guardian that works independently.
Appearance and Coat
It has a large, muscular and imposing body. Its thick, slightly wavy long double coat is always white; it needs regular brushing and sheds moderately. It has a noble and powerful bearing.
Temperament and Personality
The Kuvasz is brave, loyal and independent. It bonds strongly with its family and is wary of and protective toward strangers. It can make independent decisions and is dignified yet fearless when needed. It is gentle with children but needs supervision because of its strength.
Care, Exercise and Training
Its thick coat needs regular brushing. It requires moderate exercise. Because of its strong guarding instinct and independent nature, early socialization and experienced, consistent training are essential; it is challenging for first-time dog owners.
Health
Due to its giant size, hip/elbow dysplasia, gastric torsion (GDV) and hypothyroidism may occur. Controlled feeding during puppyhood is important. The Kuvasz suits experienced owners looking for a loyal, brave and powerful guardian dog who can provide ample space and thorough socialization.
PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
