About the Breed

Origin and History

The LaPerm appeared in 1982 on a farm in Oregon, USA, with a kitten named "Curly" born with a curly coat due to a spontaneous gene mutation. This curly coat trait is carried by a dominant gene. Its name was inspired by the French word "perm" (curl).

Appearance and Coat

It has a medium-sized, well-balanced body. Its most distinctive feature is its soft, light curly (ringleted) coat; the curls are especially pronounced on the neck and tail, and even its whiskers are curly. There are both shorthaired and semi-longhaired varieties. Interestingly, kittens are sometimes born bald and develop a curly coat over time.

Temperament and Personality

The LaPerm is affectionate, social and people-loving. It loves following its owner, climbing onto shoulders and interacting; it seeks warmth. It is curious and playful but not overly demanding, with a balanced temperament. It gets along well with children and other animals.

Care and Nutrition

Its curly coat needs surprisingly little grooming; over-brushing should be avoided, and gentle, infrequent grooming is recommended so as not to ruin the curls. It sheds little. A balanced diet and regular play support its health.

Health

The LaPerm is generally a sturdy, resilient breed. The gene responsible for the curly coat has not been associated with any skin or health problems. No serious breed-specific hereditary disease has been documented. Responsible breeding that preserves diversity and regular veterinary check-ups are recommended.

Who Is It Suitable For?

The LaPerm is ideal for individuals and families looking for an affectionate, easygoing cat with an unusual look. With its low shedding and easy-care nature, it fits into many homes.

PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
