About the Breed
Origin and History
The Finnish Lapphund is a spitz-type herding dog used by the Sámi people in northern Finland to herd reindeer. It is an exceptionally cold-hardy, friendly and intelligent breed.
Appearance and Coat
It has a medium-sized, sturdy and well-balanced body with erect ears. Its thick, waterproof long double coat comes in many colors; it protects against the cold, sheds heavily and needs regular grooming.
Temperament and Personality
The Finnish Lapphund is friendly, loyal and affectionate; despite being a herding dog, it is remarkably docile. It is devoted to people and gets along wonderfully with children and other animals. It is alert and prone to barking, with an intelligent, calm and easygoing temperament.
Care, Exercise and Training
Its thick double coat needs regular brushing; it sheds heavily. It requires moderate to high exercise. Intelligent and eager to please, it responds well to reward-based training, and early socialization helps keep barking in check.
Health
It is generally robust and hardy. Hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA — a DNA test is available) and, rarely, GM2 gangliosidosis may occur. Responsible breeding is recommended. The Finnish Lapphund suits families looking for a friendly, intelligent and easygoing family dog who can set aside time for coat care and exercise.
PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
