About the Breed
Origin and History
The Leonberger was developed in the German town of Leonberg with the aim of creating a majestic dog resembling a lion. Produced by crossing large mountain dogs, it is a versatile working and companion dog.
Appearance and Coat
It has a giant, muscular and majestic body, and males have a thick neck ruff resembling a lion's mane. Its waterproof long double coat comes in fawn-to-red shades with a black mask; it sheds heavily and needs regular grooming.
Temperament and Personality
The Leonberger is gentle, calm and affectionate. Despite its giant size, it is extremely soft-hearted; it is devoted to its family and patient and protective with children. It is a sociable, balanced dog that loves water, and it is also used as a therapy dog.
Care, Exercise and Training
Its thick coat needs regular brushing to prevent tangles; it sheds heavily. It requires moderate exercise, but excessive exertion should be avoided during puppyhood for healthy joint development. Its gentle nature responds well to calm, reward-based training.
Health
Due to its giant size, hip/elbow dysplasia, gastric torsion (GDV) and bone cancer may occur. Breed-specific hereditary neurological diseases (leukoencephalomyelopathy and polyneuropathy — DNA tests are available) may also occur. Responsible breeding is important. The Leonberger suits families looking for a gentle, affectionate giant family dog who can set aside time for coat care and health monitoring.
PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
