About the Breed

Origin and History

The Lhasa Apso is a sacred breed prized in Tibet as an indoor sentinel (alarm dog) in monasteries and palaces. For centuries it was believed to bring good luck, and it is known for its independent and alert nature.

Appearance and Coat

It has a small, sturdy body and a thick coat that covers its eyes. Its dense, heavy, long straight coat comes in various colors; it sheds little but needs regular (frequent) grooming. Some owners prefer to keep the coat short.

Temperament and Personality

The Lhasa Apso is self-confident, loyal and independent. It is devoted to its family but dignified and somewhat aloof, and wary of strangers. It is alert and prone to barking, making it an excellent alarm dog. It is intelligent but has a stubborn streak.

Care, Exercise and Training

Its long coat needs regular (frequent) brushing to prevent matting, and the area around the eyes should be kept clean. Low to moderate exercise is sufficient. Its stubborn nature calls for patient, reward-based training and early socialization.

Health

Breed-specific hereditary renal dysplasia, patellar luxation, eye problems (dry eye, cherry eye) and respiratory sensitivity related to its slightly flat face may occur. Regular eye and kidney check-ups are recommended. The Lhasa Apso suits individuals and families looking for a loyal, dignified, low-exercise companion/watchdog who can set aside time for coat care.

PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
