About the Breed
Origin and History
The Alaskan Malamute is a powerful Arctic dog bred by the Mahlemut people of Alaska to haul heavy loads by sled. It is larger and stronger than the Husky and is known for its endurance and friendly temperament.
Appearance and Coat
It has a large, muscular, heavy-boned body and a plumed tail. Its dense, waterproof long double coat protects it from the cold; it sheds heavily twice a year ("blowing coat") and needs regular grooming.
Temperament and Personality
The Malamute is friendly, loyal and playful; it is very fond of people and is not a guard dog. It is independent and intelligent, with a strong prey drive and a tendency to dig. As a pack dog, it may try to establish dominance over other dogs; it loves to howl.
Care, Exercise and Training
Its dense coat should be brushed regularly, and daily during shedding seasons. It requires a great deal of exercise; care must be taken to prevent overheating in hot climates. Its independent nature calls for patient, consistent training and early socialization.
Health
Hip dysplasia, cataracts, breed-specific hereditary polyneuropathy and chondrodysplasia (DNA tests are available) and gastric torsion (GDV) may occur. Responsible breeding is recommended. The Alaskan Malamute suits active owners looking for a strong, friendly and hardy dog who can provide intense exercise, a cool environment and coat care.
PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
