About the Breed
Origin and History
The Belgian Malinois is the short-haired variety of the Belgian Shepherd. Thanks to its superior intelligence, agility and endurance, it is one of the most popular breeds worldwide for police, military and protection work.
Appearance and Coat
It has a large, athletic and extremely agile body. Its short, dense double coat has a fawn-to-red base with a black mask and tipping; it is easy to care for and sheds moderately.
Temperament and Personality
The Malinois is extremely intelligent, energetic and passionate about work. It bonds strongly with its owner and constantly wants a "job"; if its mental and physical needs are not met, it becomes destructive. It is alert, agile and protective, and wary of strangers. It has strong drive and focus.
Care, Exercise and Training
Its short coat is easy to maintain. It needs very high exercise and intense mental stimulation; long daily activity, training and tasks are essential. Thanks to its exceptional intelligence, it adapts superbly to training, but its strong drives require experienced ownership.
Health
It is generally robust and athletic. Hip/elbow dysplasia and eye problems may occur. Regular check-ups are recommended. The Belgian Malinois suits experienced, very active owners looking for a very active, intelligent dog eager to work, who can provide intense exercise, training and tasks; it is too demanding for an average household.
PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
