About the Breed
Origin and History
The Maltese is an elegant companion dog from the Mediterranean (the Malta region) whose roots go back to antiquity, and it was prized by the nobility. With its silky white coat and charming personality, it has been a beloved lap dog for thousands of years.
Appearance and Coat
It has a very small, elegant body. Its most distinctive feature is its silky, straight, pure white coat that can grow down to the floor; since it has no undercoat, it sheds little but needs regular (frequent) grooming.
Temperament and Personality
The Maltese is affectionate, sociable and very devoted to people. It loves to cuddle up to its owner and receive attention, and it does not like being left alone. It is playful, lively and brave; despite its small size, it is alert and prone to barking. It gets along well with children and other animals.
Care, Exercise and Training
Its silky coat needs regular (frequent) brushing to prevent matting, and tear staining around the eyes should be cleaned. Low exercise is sufficient. It is intelligent, but house training may require patience; reward-based training and early socialization are important.
Health
Patellar luxation, a portosystemic shunt affecting the liver, dental disease, tear staining and, rarely, "white dog shaker syndrome" may occur. Regular dental and eye care is important. The Maltese suits individuals and families looking for an affectionate, sociable, low-shedding lap dog who can set aside time for coat care.
PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
