About the Breed

Origin and History

The Manx is the natural tailless cat of the Isle of Man, off the coast of England. In the island's isolated population, a dominant gene mutation became established, and taillessness became the symbol of the breed. For centuries it was valued as a skilled mouser on the island's farms. Its semi-longhaired version is known as the Cymric.

Appearance and Coat

It has a round, muscular, cobby body and a round head; because its hind legs are longer than its front legs, it has a rabbit-like stance. The complete or partial absence of a tail is its most distinctive feature; individuals range from completely tailless ("rumpy") to short-tailed ("stumpy"). Its double-layered short coat is dense.

Temperament and Personality

The Manx is friendly, loyal and attached to people; it is often described as dog-like. It is playful and intelligent, can learn to fetch and follows its family around. With its powerful hind legs, it is a good jumper. It is a balanced housemate that gets along well with children and other animals.

Care and Nutrition

Its double-layered short coat should be brushed once or twice a week, more often during seasonal changes. A balanced diet and regular play support its health.

Health

Because the gene that causes taillessness in the Manx can also affect spinal development, it leads to an important hereditary risk: Manx syndrome. This condition can cause signs such as spina bifida, urinary/fecal incontinence and hind-leg weakness; it usually appears in the first months. In addition, the tailless gene is lethal in its homozygous (double) form; for this reason, responsible breeders do not mate two tailless cats. It is important to know about these issues before adopting.

Who Is It Suitable For?

The Manx suits conscientious owners looking for a friendly, playful cat who are also aware of the health responsibilities related to taillessness. When adopting, it is important to prioritize healthy, symptom-free individuals.
