About the Breed
Origin and History
The Newfoundland is a giant working dog developed in the Newfoundland region of Canada to help fishermen, haul nets and perform water rescues. Its water-resistant coat and webbed feet make it an outstanding swimmer.
Appearance and Coat
It has a massive, muscular, powerful body and webbed feet. Its water-resistant, thick, long double coat is usually black, brown, or black and white (Landseer); it sheds heavily and needs regular grooming. It may drool.
Temperament and Personality
The Newfoundland is extremely gentle, calm and loyal, and is known as the "nanny dog." Devoted to its family, it is exceptionally patient and protective with children and is not inclined to aggression. It loves water and has a natural rescue instinct.
Care, Exercise and Training
Its thick coat needs regular brushing; it sheds heavily. It needs moderate exercise, especially swimming, but excessive exertion should be avoided during puppyhood for healthy joint development. Its gentle nature responds well to calm, reward-based training.
Health
Hip/elbow dysplasia, heart disease (aortic stenosis), urinary stones (cystinuria — a DNA test is available) and gastric torsion (GDV) may occur. Regular heart and joint checks are important. The Newfoundland suits families looking for a gentle, affectionate giant family dog who can make time for coat care and health monitoring.
PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
