About the Breed
Origin and History
The Norwegian Elkhound is an ancient spitz breed that has been used in Norway for thousands of years to track elk and other big game and for guarding. With a long history dating back to the Viking Age, it is known for its courage and stamina.
Appearance and Coat
It has a medium-sized, compact, powerful body, pricked ears and a tail that curls over its back. Its thick, water-resistant double coat comes in shades of gray; it sheds heavily and needs regular grooming.
Temperament and Personality
The Norwegian Elkhound is brave, loyal and self-confident. It is devoted to its family and gets along well with children. Alert and prone to barking, it makes a good watchdog. It has an independent, determined hunting instinct and is hardy and energetic.
Care, Exercise and Training
Its double coat needs regular brushing; it sheds heavily. It needs a lot of exercise. Intelligent but independent, it benefits from consistent, reward-based training and early socialization. Because it is prone to obesity, portion control is necessary.
Health
Hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), Fanconi syndrome (which affects the kidneys) and obesity may occur. Regular checkups are recommended. The Norwegian Elkhound suits active families looking for a brave, loyal and hardy dog who can provide plenty of exercise and coat care.
PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
