About the Breed
Origin and History
The Otterhound is a scent hound developed in England for otter hunting, adapted to working in water with its webbed feet and water-resistant coat. Today it is one of the rarest dog breeds in the world.
Appearance and Coat
It has a large, muscular, powerful body, long drooping ears and webbed feet. Its harsh, wiry, oily, water-resistant thick coat comes in a variety of colors and needs regular grooming.
Temperament and Personality
The Otterhound is friendly, sociable and determined. It gets along well with family and other dogs; it is independent yet affectionate. It has a strong scenting instinct and a passion for water. It has a deep, melodious voice and tends to bark.
Care, Exercise and Training
Its wiry coat needs regular brushing; its beard can get dirty after meals. It needs a lot of exercise, especially swimming; because of its strong scenting instinct, a secure area is important. Its independent nature calls for patient, reward-based training.
Health
Hip/elbow dysplasia, gastric torsion (GDV) and the bleeding disorder Glanzmann's thrombasthenia (a DNA test is available) may occur. Regular checkups are recommended. The Otterhound suits active owners looking for a friendly, determined, water-loving dog who can provide plenty of exercise and space.
PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
