About the Breed

Origin and History

The Pekingese (Peking Dog) is an ancient companion dog held sacred in China's imperial palaces. Because of its lion-like appearance it is known as the "lion dog"; for centuries it belonged only to the nobility.

Appearance and Coat

It has a small, compact but heavy-boned body, a flat (brachycephalic) face and a thick coat resembling a lion's mane. Its dense, long double coat needs regular grooming; it sheds moderately. It has a characteristic dignified, rolling gait.

Temperament and Personality

The Pekingese is loyal, dignified and independent, with a cat-like, noble character. It is devoted to its family but not overly demonstrative, and it is wary of strangers. Brave and self-confident, it makes a good alarm dog. It is calm and low-energy.

Care, Exercise and Training

Its dense coat needs regular brushing to prevent matting, and its facial folds should be kept clean. Little exercise is enough, but because of its flat face, care must be taken in hot weather. Its stubborn nature calls for patient training.

Health

Because of its flat face, the main concerns are brachycephalic airway problems (BOAS), heat sensitivity and eye problems (ulcers, the eye slipping out of its socket). Back/disc problems and skin fold infections may also occur. A cool environment and eye care are critical. The Pekingese suits individuals looking for a loyal, calm, low-energy companion who are aware of its brachycephalic health needs.
