About the Breed

Origin and History

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is an agile herding dog developed in Wales to drive cattle. Its short legs helped it dodge the cattle's kicks. It became world-famous as the favorite breed of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom.

Appearance and Coat

It has a long-bodied, short-legged, sturdy build, large erect ears and usually a short tail. Its medium-length, water-repellent double coat comes in a variety of colors; it sheds heavily and needs regular grooming.

Temperament and Personality

The Pembroke Corgi is intelligent, loyal and cheerful. It is devoted to its family, gets along well with children and is eager to work. Alert and prone to barking, it makes a good watchdog. Because of its herding instinct it may try to herd; it is energetic and playful.

Care, Exercise and Training

Its double coat needs regular brushing; it sheds heavily. It needs moderate to high exercise, but jumping and stairs should be limited for spinal health and an ideal weight should be maintained. Thanks to its exceptional intelligence, it adapts superbly to training.

Health

Because of its long body, back/disc herniation (IVDD) and obesity are the main concerns. DNA tests are also available for progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) and degenerative myelopathy (DM); von Willebrand disease may also occur. An ideal weight and protecting the spine are important. The Pembroke Corgi suits families looking for a smart, loyal and cheerful family dog.

PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
