American Pit Bull Terrier

Origin and History

The American Pit Bull Terrier is a muscular, athletic breed of bulldog and terrier ancestry developed in America. Despite its negative past uses, in modern, responsible breeding it is a family dog known for its love of people and its loyalty. In some regions, owning one is subject to legal regulations.

Appearance and Coat

It has a medium-sized, extremely muscular, athletic body and a powerful jaw. Its short, glossy, stiff coat comes in many colors; it is easy to care for and sheds little.

Temperament and Personality

The Pit Bull is self-confident, loyal and very people-oriented; with proper socialization it becomes extremely affectionate and tender with children ("nanny dog"). It is energetic, playful and athletic, and loves to please. Temperament depends largely on training and upbringing; socialization with other dogs is important.

Care, Exercise and Training

Its short coat is easy to care for. It needs a lot of exercise and mental stimulation. Smart and eager to please, it absolutely needs early socialization and consistent, reward-based training. Responsible ownership and checking local regulations are important.

Health

Hip dysplasia, skin allergies, hereditary cerebellar ataxia (a DNA test is available), heart problems and cataracts may occur. Regular checkups are recommended. The Pit Bull suits people looking for a loyal, affectionate and active dog who can devote time to socialization, training and responsible ownership.
