About the Breed
Origin and History
The Plott Hound is a brave scent hound developed in America from German hunting dog stock and used to track big game such as bear and wild boar. It is the official state dog of North Carolina and is known for its stamina and determination.
Appearance and Coat
It has a large, muscular, athletic body. Its short, glossy coat comes in a characteristic "brindle" (striped) pattern; it is easy to care for and sheds little.
Temperament and Personality
The Plott Hound is brave, loyal and determined. It is attached to its family and gets along well with children. It has a strong scenting instinct and a passion for hunting; once it picks up a trail, it is extremely resolute. It has a deep, powerful voice and tends to bark.
Care, Exercise and Training
Its short coat is easy to care for; its ears should be kept clean. It needs a very high level of exercise and scent stimulation; because of its strong prey drive, a secure, fenced area is a must. Its scent-driven nature calls for patient, reward-based training.
Health
It is generally hardy. Hip dysplasia, gastric torsion (GDV) and ear infections may occur. Regular ear care and veterinary checkups are recommended. The Plott Hound suits active owners looking for a determined, loyal and hardy hunting/activity dog who can provide plenty of exercise and space.
PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
