About the Breed
Origin and History
The Pomeranian is a toy spitz breed developed in the Pomerania region of Germany/Poland by miniaturizing large Scandinavian sled dogs. It rose to popularity thanks to Queen Victoria's affection for the breed and is known for its fluffy look and bold personality.
Appearance and Coat
It has a very small, compact body, a fox-like face and a plumed tail that curls over its back. Its dense, fluffy, long double coat comes in many colors; it needs regular brushing and sheds moderately.
Character and Temperament
The Pomeranian is lively, bold and intelligent, and self-confident despite its small size. It is devoted to its family, curious and playful. Alert and prone to barking, it makes a good watchdog. It may be wary of strangers and large dogs; it is trainable.
Care, Exercise and Training
Its double coat needs regular brushing. Low to moderate exercise is enough. Dental health deserves special attention. It is smart and trainable; early socialization and consistent training help balance barking and "small dog syndrome."
Health
Luxating patella, tracheal collapse, dental disease, hereditary hair loss (alopecia X / "black skin disease"), hypoglycemia in puppies and an open fontanel (soft spot in the skull) may occur. Regular dental checkups are important. The Pomeranian suits individuals and families looking for a bold, smart and affectionate little companion who can stay on top of dental care.
PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
