About the Breed

Origin and History

Contrary to its glamorous appearance, the Standard Poodle originates from a water retriever; it was used in Germany and France to retrieve game that fell into the water. Even its characteristic clips were originally functional, keeping the joints warm while making swimming easier. Of its three sizes (standard, miniature, toy), the Standard Poodle is the largest.

Appearance and Coat

It has a long-legged, athletic and elegant body. Its most distinctive feature is its dense, soft curly coat; it sheds very little and spreads less of the hair and dander that cause allergies. It comes in many solid colors. It requires regular professional clipping and grooming.

Temperament and Personality

The Standard Poodle is exceptionally intelligent, friendly and people-oriented; it is considered one of the smartest dog breeds. It loves to please and adapts perfectly to training. It is energetic and playful and loves water; it is attached to its family but can be wary of strangers. It has a sensitive, responsive temperament and does not respond well to harsh training.

Grooming, Exercise and Training

Its curly coat requires regular brushing and professional clipping every 4-6 weeks to prevent matting; this is the main grooming commitment. Because it sheds little, it is better tolerated by some people with allergies (but it is not completely hypoallergenic). Due to its high intelligence, plenty of exercise and mental stimulation are essential; it is extremely receptive to training.

Health

Some hereditary conditions occur in the Standard Poodle. Because of its deep chest, gastric torsion (GDV/bloat) is a significant risk. Hip dysplasia, the hormonal disorder Addison's disease, a skin/hair follicle disease (sebaceous adenitis), progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) and epilepsy may also occur. Responsible breeders carry out the relevant screenings; regular veterinary checkups are recommended.

Who Is It Right For?

The Standard Poodle is ideal for individuals and families looking for a smart, trainable, low-shedding and active dog who can set aside the budget and time for regular professional grooming. It is not suitable for owners who would neglect coat care.
