About the Breed

Origin and History

The Pug is an ancient companion dog prized in China as the lap dog of emperors. Loved for centuries for its wrinkled face, comical personality and affectionate nature, it is described by the motto "a lot in a little package" (multum in parvo).

Appearance and Coat

It has a small, compact, muscular body, a wrinkled flat (brachycephalic) face and a curled tail. Its short, glossy coat is fawn or black; it is easy to care for but sheds more than expected. The facial folds should be kept clean.

Character and Temperament

The Pug is affectionate, social and extremely people-oriented. It has a comical, fun-loving personality; it loves spending time with its family and dislikes being left alone. It gets along wonderfully with children and other animals. It is a calm, adaptable companion that barks little.

Care, Exercise and Training

Its short coat is easy to care for but sheds; the facial folds should be cleaned regularly. Low exercise is enough, but because of its flat face, care is needed in extreme heat and during exertion, and obesity should be avoided.

Health

Because of its flat face, brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS), heat sensitivity and eye problems (ulcers, eye proptosis) are the main concerns. Breed-specific brain inflammation (PDE, Pug dog encephalitis; a DNA test is available), obesity and skin fold infections may also occur. A cool environment, ideal weight and eye/fold care are critical. The Pug suits families looking for an affectionate, social companion with low exercise needs who are aware of its brachycephalic health needs.

PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
