About the Breed
Origin and History
The Rhodesian Ridgeback was developed in Southern Africa to accompany hunters on lion hunts and to guard farms; that is why it is also known as the "lion dog." Its most distinctive feature is the ridge of hair along its back that grows in the opposite direction.
Appearance and Coat
It has a large, muscular, athletic body. Its short, glossy coat comes in shades of wheaten, and it has the characteristic ridge of reverse-growing hair on its back. It is easy to care for and sheds little.
Character and Temperament
The Rhodesian Ridgeback is loyal, self-confident and independent. It bonds strongly with its family and is wary of strangers and protective. It is calm, yet courageous and athletic when needed. It is intelligent but has a stubborn streak; it needs strong leadership and an experienced owner.
Care, Exercise and Training
Its short coat is easy to care for. It needs a high level of exercise. Because of its independent, strong-willed nature, early socialization and consistent, patient training are important; it requires an experienced owner.
Health
Breed-specific dermoid sinus (a DNA test is available), hip/elbow dysplasia, gastric torsion (GDV) and hypothyroidism may occur. Responsible breeding is recommended. The Rhodesian Ridgeback suits experienced owners looking for a loyal, strong and athletic dog who can devote time to training, exercise and socialization.
PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
