About the Breed

Origin and History

The Russell Terrier (Jack Russell Terrier) is an agile, bold hunting terrier developed in England to bolt foxes from their dens during fox hunts. It takes its name from its breeder, the Reverend John Russell, and is known for its energy and intelligence.

Appearance and Coat

It has a small, athletic, muscular body. Its smooth, rough or broken coat is usually white with black or tan markings; it sheds little, and grooming varies with coat type.

Character and Temperament

The Jack Russell is extremely energetic, bold and intelligent. It has typical terrier determination; it is curious, playful and spirited. It is devoted to its family but has a strong prey drive and a tendency to dig and escape. If its high energy is not adequately met, it becomes destructive.

Care, Exercise and Training

Its coat is brushed regularly according to type; it sheds little. It needs a great deal of exercise and mental stimulation; because of its strong prey drive, a secure, fenced area is essential. It is smart and trainable, but its independent nature calls for consistent, reward-based training.

Health

Luxating patella, lens luxation (a DNA test is available), congenital deafness, a hip joint condition (Legg-Perthes disease) and hereditary ataxia (a DNA test is available) may occur. Regular eye exams are recommended. The Jack Russell suits active owners looking for a very active, bold and playful dog who can offer it intense exercise, stimulation and a secure space.
