About the Breed
Origin and History
The Saluki is one of the world's oldest sighthound breeds, used for thousands of years in the Middle East and the Fertile Crescent to hunt gazelles and hares. Prized by ancient civilizations, it is a noble and elegant hunting dog.
Appearance and Coat
It has a large, slender, long-legged and exceptionally elegant body. It has a short, silky coat; there are feathered varieties with light fringes on the ears, legs and tail, as well as fully smooth varieties. It sheds little.
Character and Temperament
The Saluki is independent, gentle and calm, with a cat-like, reserved character. It is attached to its family but not overly obedient; it is sensitive and perceptive. It has a strong prey drive and is extraordinarily fast. It is quiet and calm at home and a determined hunter outdoors.
Care, Exercise and Training
Its silky coat is easy to care for. It needs a high level of exercise and free running; because of its strong prey drive, a secure, fenced area is essential. Its independent, sensitive nature calls for gentle, patient training; it does not respond well to harsh methods.
Health
It is generally a sound, hardy breed. Anesthesia sensitivity typical of sighthounds, heart problems and cancer may occur. Regular checkups are recommended. The Saluki suits owners looking for an elegant, calm and independent dog who can offer a secure running area and a patient approach.
PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
