About the Breed

Origin and History

The Samoyed is an Arctic dog bred in Siberia by the Samoyed people for herding reindeer, pulling sleds and keeping people warm. Living close to humans has made it an exceptionally friendly and affectionate breed.

Appearance and Coat

It has a medium-sized, strong and striking body and the characteristic "Sammy smile" created by the upturned corners of its mouth. Its thick, weather-resistant, long double coat is pure white or cream; it sheds very heavily and needs regular grooming.

Character and Temperament

The Samoyed is extremely friendly, affectionate and cheerful; it is not a guard dog and is friendly even with strangers. It is very people-oriented, gets along wonderfully with children and other animals, and dislikes being left alone. It is energetic, playful and prone to barking.

Care, Exercise and Training

Its thick double coat needs regular (frequent) brushing to prevent mats; it sheds very heavily. It needs a high level of exercise; overheating should be watched for in hot climates. It is smart but independent; reward-based training and early socialization are important.

Health

Hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA; a DNA test is available), breed-specific hereditary nephritis (a DNA test is available), diabetes and heart problems may occur. Responsible breeding is recommended. The Samoyed suits families looking for a friendly, affectionate and cheerful family dog who can devote time to intensive coat care and exercise.

PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
