About the Breed
Origin and History
The Schipperke is a small breed used in Belgium on barges and in workshops for catching rodents and as a watchdog. Its name means "little captain" in Flemish. Thanks to its curious, bold personality, it is also known as the "little black devil."
Appearance and Coat
It has a small, compact, fox-like body, erect ears and a thick ruff around the neck. It usually has an all-black, medium-length double coat; it sheds moderately and needs regular grooming.
Character and Temperament
The Schipperke is curious, energetic and self-confident. It is alert and prone to barking, making it an excellent watchdog. It is devoted to its family, smart and independent, and loves to poke its nose into everything. It has a strong prey drive and a tendency to escape.
Care, Exercise and Training
Its double coat needs regular brushing. It needs moderate to high exercise and mental stimulation. It is smart but independent; consistent, reward-based training and early socialization help balance barking, and a secure space is important.
Health
It is generally sound and long-lived. Breed-specific MPS IIIB (a DNA test is available), luxating patella and hip dysplasia may occur. Regular checkups are recommended. The Schipperke suits active owners looking for a curious, energetic and loyal small dog who can pay attention to training and a secure space.
PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
