About the Breed
Origin and History
The Sealyham Terrier is a bold hunting terrier developed in Wales to hunt badgers and otters. Although it was once popular, today it is one of the rarest dog breeds in the world; its calm temperament sets it apart from other terriers.
Appearance and Coat
It has a small, short-legged yet strong body with a full beard and eyebrows. Its harsh, wiry outer coat and soft undercoat are usually white; it sheds little and needs regular grooming plus periodic hand stripping.
Character and Temperament
The Sealyham Terrier is bold but calmer and more balanced than other terriers. It is a devoted, adaptable dog that gets along well with children. It is alert and a good watchdog; it has an independent yet affectionate character.
Care, Exercise and Training
Its wiry coat needs regular brushing and periodic hand stripping; it sheds little. Moderate exercise is enough. Its independent nature calls for patient, reward-based training and early socialization.
Health
It is generally sound and hardy. Lens luxation (a DNA test is available) and some eye problems may occur. Regular eye exams are recommended. The Sealyham Terrier suits families looking for a bold yet calm, adaptable small dog; since it is rare, patience may be needed.
PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
