About the Breed

Origin and History

The Selkirk Rex emerged in the United States in 1987 with a kitten born with a curly coat. The curly coat is carried by a dominant gene and is an independent mutation distinct from the other rex breeds (Cornish, Devon). Breeds such as the British Shorthair, Persian and Exotic were used in its development.

Appearance and Coat

It has a large, muscular and solid body and a round face. Its most distinctive feature is its soft, loose curly coat; the curls are random and natural, and even its whiskers are curly. This look has earned it comparisons to a "sheep cat" or a plush teddy bear. Both shorthaired and longhaired variants exist.

Personality and Temperament

The Selkirk Rex is patient, affectionate and calm. It has inherited a balanced temperament from the breeds used in its development: the calmness of the British Shorthair, the docility of the Persian and the playfulness of the Exotic. It is attached to people and enjoys being held, but it is not overly demanding. It is an easygoing housemate that gets along well with children and other animals.

Care and Nutrition

Its curly coat should be cared for gently, avoiding excessive brushing; too much brushing straightens the curls. Longhaired individuals need more careful grooming to prevent tangles. A balanced diet and regular play support its health.

Health

The Selkirk Rex may inherit some hereditary predispositions from the breeds used in its development. Chief among these are polycystic kidney disease (PKD), linked to the PKD1 gene from the Persian line, and the heart disease HCM; hip dysplasia may also occur. A DNA test for PKD and heart check-ups for HCM are recommended. Responsible breeding reduces these risks.

Who Is It Suitable For?

The Selkirk Rex is ideal for individuals, families and homes with children looking for an affectionate, calm cat with an unusual look. With its balanced temperament, it adapts to many lifestyles.
