About the Breed
Origin and History
The Shar Pei is one of China's ancient dog breeds; in the past it was used for guarding, hunting and farm work. It is known for its unique skin wrinkles, blue-black tongue and sand-like coat (its name means "sand skin").
Appearance and Coat
It has a medium-sized, muscular, compact body, abundant skin wrinkles, small ears and a blue-black tongue. It has a very short, harsh, bristly coat; it is easy to care for, but the wrinkles must be cleaned regularly.
Character and Temperament
The Shar Pei is calm, loyal and independent, with a dignified, reserved character. It bonds strongly with its family and is wary of strangers and protective. It is calm yet self-confident and stubborn; it is a good watchdog.
Care, Exercise and Training
Its short coat is easy to care for, but the skin folds must be cleaned regularly and kept dry (risk of fold infection). Moderate exercise is enough. Its independent, stubborn nature calls for early socialization and consistent, patient training.
Health
Breed-specific familial Shar Pei fever (FSF) and related amyloidosis, inward-rolling eyelids (entropion), skin fold infections and mild breathing problems may occur. Regular eye, skin and general checkups are important. The Shar Pei suits experienced owners looking for a calm, loyal and independent dog who can stay on top of skin care and health monitoring.
PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
