About the Breed

Origin and History

The Shetland Sheepdog (Sheltie) is a herding dog developed on Scotland's Shetland Islands to herd small flocks. In appearance it resembles a miniature Rough Collie; it is known for its intelligence and loyalty.

Appearance and Coat

It has a small-to-medium, elegant and well-balanced body. Its dense, long double coat forms an abundant mane around the neck and comes in colors such as sable, tricolor and blue merle. It sheds heavily and requires regular grooming.

Temperament and Personality

The Sheltie is extremely intelligent, loyal and affectionate. It is a sensitive dog, devoted to its family and good with children. It is alert and prone to barking, making it a good watchdog. Because of its herding instinct, it may show a tendency to herd; it loves to please and is easy to train.

Grooming, Exercise and Training

Its dense coat requires regular brushing; it sheds heavily. It needs moderate to high exercise. Thanks to its outstanding intelligence, it adapts perfectly to training and excels in dog sports; its sensitive nature calls for gentle training, and early socialization helps keep barking in check.

Health

Collie eye anomaly (CEA — DNA test available), MDR1 drug sensitivity (DNA test available), hip dysplasia, a skin disease (dermatomyositis) and von Willebrand disease may occur. Responsible breeding is recommended. The Shetland Sheepdog is ideal for families looking for a smart, loyal and trainable family dog who can devote time to coat care.
