About the Breed
Origin and History
The Shiba Inu is Japan's oldest and smallest native hunting dog breed, bred to track small game. With its independent, brave and loyal nature, it is regarded as one of Japan's national treasures.
Appearance and Coat
It has a small, compact and muscular body, erect ears, a curled tail and a fox-like face. Its dense, short double coat comes in red, sesame or black and tan; it sheds heavily (especially during seasonal changes) and requires regular grooming.
Temperament and Personality
The Shiba Inu is independent, brave and loyal; it has a cat-like character and constantly grooms itself. It is attached to its family but reserved and self-confident, and wary of strangers. It has a strong prey drive and a tendency to bolt. When excited, it may let out the characteristic "Shiba scream."
Grooming, Exercise and Training
Its double coat requires regular brushing; it sheds heavily during seasonal changes. It needs moderate to high exercise; because of its strong prey drive, a secure area is important. Its independent and stubborn nature calls for patient, reward-based training and early socialization.
Health
It is generally robust and long-lived. Patellar luxation, hip dysplasia, eye problems (PRA, glaucoma) and allergies may occur. Regular checkups are recommended. The Shiba Inu suits owners looking for an independent, clean and loyal dog who are familiar with terrier-like stubbornness and shedding.
PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
