About the Breed
Origin and History
The Shih Tzu is an ancient companion dog that was prized as a lap dog by nobility in the palaces of China and Tibet. Its name means "lion dog"; it has been loved for centuries for its charming looks and affectionate temperament.
Appearance and Coat
It has a small, compact body, a slightly flat (brachycephalic) face and large eyes. Its silky, dense, long double coat comes in many colors; it sheds little but requires regular (frequent) grooming. Some owners keep the coat short.
Temperament and Personality
The Shih Tzu is friendly, affectionate and extremely sociable. It is very devoted to people, loves being held and getting attention, and does not like being left alone. It gets along perfectly with children and other animals. It is a playful, easygoing and calm companion.
Grooming, Exercise and Training
Its silky coat requires regular (frequent) brushing to prevent matting; the area around the eyes should be kept clean. Light exercise is enough, but care should be taken in extreme heat because of its flat face. Housetraining may require patience.
Health
Because of its flat face, brachycephalic breathing problems, heat sensitivity and eye problems (dry eye, eye prolapse) may occur. Patellar luxation, renal dysplasia and dental disease may also be seen. A cool environment and eye care are important. The Shih Tzu is ideal for individuals and families looking for a friendly, affectionate, lap-loving companion who can devote time to coat care.
