About the Breed
Origin and History
The Siberian (Siberian Cat) is a native breed that developed naturally over centuries in Russia's cold Siberian region. Featured in Russian folk tales and monasteries, it developed a strong constitution and a water-resistant thick coat able to survive the harsh climate. It is considered Russia's national cat.
Appearance and Coat
It has a large, muscular and powerful body with an athletic, balanced build. Its most distinctive feature is its three-layered, thick coat, made up of a water-repellent topcoat and a dense undercoat; it forms a mane around the neck and a plume on the tail. It reaches full maturity at around 5 years of age.
Personality and Temperament
The Siberian has a friendly, intelligent and balanced temperament. It is attached to people, follows its owner around and seeks interaction; it shows "dog-like" behaviors. It may take an interest in water, is athletic and loves to climb. With its calm yet playful nature, it gets along very well with children and other animals.
Care and Nutrition
Its three-layered thick coat should be brushed several times a week to prevent tangles; grooming should be stepped up especially during the heavy shedding of seasonal transitions. A balanced diet and regular activity are important to support its large, athletic build.
Health
The Siberian is generally a hardy breed, but since the heart muscle disease hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) has been reported, regular heart check-ups are recommended. An interesting trait: some Siberian individuals are said to produce less of the Fel d 1 protein that causes allergies; for this reason they may be better tolerated by some allergic people, but this is not guaranteed and varies from cat to cat. Regular veterinary check-ups are recommended.
Who Is It Suitable For?
The Siberian is ideal for families and homes with children looking for a majestic, friendly and athletic companion and who can devote time to regular coat care. People sensitive to allergies are advised to spend time with the cat before adopting.
PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
