About the Breed
Origin and History
The Singapura takes its name from Singapore and is believed to descend from the street cats there. It was brought to the United States in the 1970s and developed as a breed. It is known as one of the smallest cat breeds in the world; despite its small size, it is muscular and full of energy.
Appearance and Coat
It has a small but muscular and balanced body, with proportionally large eyes and ears. Its most distinctive feature is its short, silky, shimmering coat with a warm brown "ticked" (banded) pattern on an ivory-beige ground. This gives it an elegant, glowing look.
Personality and Temperament
The Singapura is curious, intelligent and very devoted to people. Despite its small size, it is extremely active and playful; it loves climbing, exploring and getting involved in everything. It enjoys riding on its owner's shoulders and interacting; it has an endearing character that "pokes its nose into everything." It is social and gets along well with other animals.
Care and Nutrition
Its short, silky coat is very easy to care for; brushing once a week is enough. What it really needs is play and interaction. Balanced, high-quality nutrition suited to its small build is important.
Health
The main scientifically described hereditary disease in the Singapura is anemia caused by pyruvate kinase deficiency (PK deficiency), linked to the PKLR gene; a reliable DNA test is available for it. In addition, because of its small build, uterine inertia may occur in some females during birth. Responsible breeders perform DNA screening; regular veterinary check-ups are recommended.
Who Is It Suitable For?
The Singapura is ideal for individuals and families looking for a small, energetic, people-loving companion and who can offer it plenty of interaction and play. It may seem too curious and active for those looking for a calm, aloof cat.
PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
