About the Breed

Origin and History

The Snowshoe was developed in the United States in the 1960s from white-pawed individuals that appeared among Siamese cats; it is based on a cross between the Siamese and the American Shorthair. Its name comes from its white paws, which look as if they have walked through snow. It is a rare breed because the characteristic pattern is genetically difficult to achieve.

Appearance and Coat

It has a medium-to-large, muscular and balanced body. Its most distinctive features are the "pointed" pattern, striking blue eyes, symmetrical white "sock" markings on all four paws and an inverted "V" white pattern on the face. Its short, silky coat is easy to care for.

Personality and Temperament

The Snowshoe combines the sociability of the Siamese with the balance of the American Shorthair. It is intelligent, people-loving and interactive; it follows its owner around and asks for play. It is not as loud as the Siamese but is communicative. It may show an interest in water and can learn to play fetch. It is social and bonds strongly with its family; it does not like being left alone.

Care and Nutrition

Its short, silky coat is very easy to care for; brushing once a week is enough. What it really needs is social interaction and play. A balanced diet and regular activity support its health.

Health

The Snowshoe is generally a healthy breed. Because it descends from the Siamese, cosmetic traits such as a slight kink in the tail or crossed eyes (strabismus) have historically been seen; these usually do not affect health. Some individuals may have a Siamese-derived predisposition to eye disease (PRA). It has no known serious breed-specific hereditary disease; regular veterinary check-ups are recommended.

Who Is It Suitable For?

The Snowshoe is ideal for individuals and families looking for an intelligent, social and people-loving companion and who can offer it plenty of interaction. It is not ideal for homes where it would be left alone for long periods.

PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
