About the Breed

Origin and History

The St. Bernard (Saint Bernard) is a giant rescue dog bred by monastery monks in the Swiss Alps to find and rescue travelers lost in the snow. It has become legendary for its courage and gentle temperament.

Appearance and Coat

It has a massive, muscular and powerful body and a broad head. There are both long-haired and short-haired varieties; it is usually red and white. It sheds heavily, drools and requires regular grooming.

Temperament and Personality

The St. Bernard is extremely gentle, calm and loyal; despite its massive size, it is soft-hearted. It is devoted to its family, extremely patient and protective with children (a "nanny dog"), and not prone to aggression. It is a calm, well-balanced and affectionate giant companion.

Grooming, Exercise and Training

Its coat requires regular brushing; it sheds heavily and drools. Low to moderate exercise is enough, but excessive exertion should be avoided during puppyhood for healthy joint development. It is prone to overheating in hot climates. Because of its strength, early socialization and calm training are important.

Health

Because of its giant size, hip/elbow dysplasia, gastric torsion (GDV), heart disease (DCM), eyelid problems (entropion), bone cancer and heat sensitivity may occur. Its short lifespan is linked to its giant size. The St. Bernard suits families looking for a gentle, affectionate and giant family dog who can provide plenty of space, coat care and health monitoring.

PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
