Greater Swiss Mountain Dog

Origin and History

The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog is the largest of the four Swiss mountain dogs, used in Switzerland for draft work, cattle driving and guarding farms. It is known for its strong yet gentle nature.

Appearance and Coat

It has a massive, muscular and powerful body. Its short, dense double coat has the characteristic tricolor (black/brown/white) pattern; it sheds moderately and is easy to care for.

Temperament and Personality

The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog is calm, loyal and self-confident; despite its massive size, it is gentle and affectionate. It is devoted to its family and patient and protective with children. It is sociable, well-balanced and eager to work; it is wary of strangers but friendly.

Grooming, Exercise and Training

Its short coat is easy to care for. It needs moderate exercise, but excessive exertion should be avoided during puppyhood for healthy joint development. It is intelligent and trainable; early socialization and calm, consistent training are important.

Health

Because of its giant size, hip/elbow dysplasia, gastric torsion (GDV), epilepsy, a joint cartilage disorder (OCD) and urinary incontinence may occur. Regular checkups are recommended. The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog suits families looking for a calm, loyal and gentle giant family dog who can provide plenty of space and health monitoring.
