About the Breed
Origin and History
The Tibetan Mastiff is an ancient guardian dog bred in the Himalayas to protect monasteries and flocks from wolves, snow leopards and thieves. It is known for its imposing appearance and independent guarding instinct.
Appearance and Coat
It has a massive, muscular and powerful body and a thick, lion-like mane around the neck. Its dense, long double coat protects it from the cold; it sheds heavily once a year and requires regular grooming.
Temperament and Personality
The Tibetan Mastiff is loyal, brave and extremely independent. It bonds strongly with its family and territory and is wary of and protective against strangers. It is capable of making independent decisions, dignified but fearless when needed. It is alert at night and prone to barking.
Grooming, Exercise and Training
Its thick coat requires regular brushing; it sheds heavily once a year. It needs moderate exercise. Because of its strong guarding instinct and independent nature, extensive early socialization and experienced, consistent training are essential; it is not suitable for first-time dog owners.
Health
Hip/elbow dysplasia, hypothyroidism, a breed-specific hereditary nerve disease (CIDN — DNA test available) and eyelid problems may occur. Regular checkups are recommended. The Tibetan Mastiff suits experienced, responsible owners looking for a powerful guardian dog who can provide plenty of space and extensive socialization.
PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
