About the Breed

Origin and History

The Tibetan Terrier is an ancient companion dog, prized by monks in Tibetan monasteries and believed to bring good luck. Despite its name, it is not a true terrier; it is a versatile monastery and farm dog.

Appearance and Coat

It is a medium-sized dog with a compact body, a profuse coat that falls over the eyes, and large, flat, snowshoe-like feet. Its dense, long double coat comes in many colors; it sheds little but needs regular (frequent) grooming.

Personality and Temperament

The Tibetan Terrier is loyal, affectionate and intelligent. It is devoted to its family, gets along well with children and is adaptable. It is alert and prone to barking, making it a good watchdog, and may be wary of strangers. It has a playful, balanced and sensitive temperament.

Care, Exercise and Training

Its profuse long coat needs regular (frequent) brushing to prevent matting. It needs moderate exercise. Intelligent and eager to please, it responds well to reward-based training; early socialization is important.

Health

Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA — DNA test available), neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (NCL — DNA test available), hip dysplasia, patellar luxation and lens luxation may occur. Responsible breeding is recommended. The Tibetan Terrier suits families looking for a loyal, affectionate and adaptable family dog who can make time for coat care.

PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
