About the Breed

Origin and History

The Tonkinese was developed by crossing the Burmese and the Siamese, with the aim of combining the best traits of both breeds. It was standardized in Canada and the United States. It carries the warmth of the Burmese and the elegance and liveliness of the Siamese in a balanced way.

Appearance and Coat

It has a medium-sized, muscular, well-balanced body that is heavier than it looks. Its short, silky, satin-textured coat needs little care and has a lustrous sheen. Its most special look is the "mink" pattern, which falls between the Burmese and Siamese patterns; these cats have eyes of a unique aquamarine (blue-green) shade.

Personality and Temperament

The Tonkinese is extremely social, intelligent and playful, and very devoted to people. It follows its owner around, climbs onto shoulders, plays fetch and wants constant interaction; it does not like being left alone. Although not as loud as the Siamese, it is communicative. It is a warm, energetic and engaged companion that gets along well with children and other pets.

Care and Nutrition

Its short satin coat is very easy to maintain with weekly brushing or wiping. Its real need is social interaction and play. Because it has a good appetite, portion control and maintaining an ideal weight are important.

Health

The Tonkinese is generally a robust breed, but it may carry some predispositions from its parent breeds, the Burmese and the Siamese: progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), gum disease (gingivitis) and, in some individuals, sensitivity to drugs/anesthesia. Responsible breeding and regular veterinary and dental check-ups are recommended.

Who Is It Suitable For?

The Tonkinese is ideal for families and individuals looking for a warm, social, playful and people-loving companion and who can offer it plenty of interaction. It is not ideal for homes where it would be left alone for long periods.

PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
