About the Breed

Origin and History

The Van Cat (Turkish Van) is a long-established breed unique to Türkiye that developed naturally over centuries around Lake Van in Eastern Anatolia. It has a long history and cultural value among the people of the region. The Van Cat House (research and conservation center) at Van Yüzüncü Yıl University works to protect purebred individuals and pass them on to future generations. Besides its fame as "the cat that swims", it is regarded as a national natural heritage.

Appearance and Coat

It has a large, muscular and athletic body. Its most characteristic feature is the look known as the "Van pattern": the body is completely white, with color only on the head and tail (usually red/auburn). Its semi-long, soft, water-resistant coat has little undercoat, so it mats relatively little. Its eyes may be amber, blue or a different color in each eye (heterochromia).

Personality and Temperament

The Van Cat is energetic, athletic and playful. It is famous for its love of water, which has become synonymous with its name; many individuals enjoy playing with water and even swimming. It is intelligent and curious and loves climbing to high places and active games. It is attached to its owner and social, yet also independent; rather than being a constant lap cat, it prefers spending active time together.

Care and Nutrition

Because it has little undercoat, care is easy; brushing two or three times a week is enough. Due to its high energy, it needs plenty of play space, climbing opportunities and mental stimulation. A high-quality, balanced diet is recommended to support its athletic build.

Health

The Van Cat is generally a hardy breed. The best scientifically known hereditary issue, as in the Turkish Angora, is hereditary deafness associated with white coat and blue eyes: the dominant white (W) gene can affect inner ear development, and hearing loss may occur, especially in blue-eyed individuals. In odd-eyed individuals, deafness is more likely in the ear on the blue-eyed side. Hearing testing (BAER) and regular veterinary check-ups are recommended.

Who Is It Suitable For?

The Van Cat is ideal for individuals and families looking for an active, playful and athletic companion and who can offer it plenty of exercise and interaction. Its interest in water makes it a fascinating character; it is important to be aware of the possibility of hearing impairment and to provide a safe indoor life.

PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
