Vizsla

Origin and History

The Vizsla (Hungarian Pointer) was bred in Hungary as a versatile hunting dog able to both point and retrieve. With a centuries-old history, it is known for its athleticism, intelligence and extraordinary devotion to people.

Appearance and Coat

It has a large, lean, athletic and elegant body. Its short, dense and glossy coat is the characteristic golden-rust (rozsdás) color; having no undercoat, it sheds very little and is easy to care for. Its lean build makes it sensitive to cold.

Personality and Temperament

The Vizsla is extremely affectionate, energetic and people-oriented; it sticks to its owner like Velcro, which is why it is called the "Velcro dog." It gets along well with children and other animals; it dislikes being left alone and is prone to separation anxiety. It has very high energy and a strong prey drive.

Care, Exercise and Training

Its short coat is easy to care for. It needs a great deal of exercise, including long runs and activity every day. Intelligent and sensitive, it responds excellently to gentle, reward-based training and does not respond well to harsh methods.

Health

It is generally healthy and athletic. Hip dysplasia, epilepsy, hypothyroidism, certain cancers and eye problems may occur. Regular check-ups are recommended. The Vizsla suits active families looking for an affectionate, energetic and trainable dog who can offer plenty of exercise and attention; it is not ideal for homes where it would be left alone for long periods.
