About the Breed

Origin and History

The Treeing Walker Coonhound is a scent hound developed in America for raccoon hunting, known for its speed and determination. It is famous for forcing quarry up a tree ("treeing") and announcing it with its voice; it descends from the English Foxhound.

Appearance and Coat

It has a large, athletic and well-balanced body with long, drooping ears. Its short, dense coat is usually tricolor (black/white/tan); it is easy to care for and sheds little.

Personality and Temperament

The Treeing Walker is friendly, energetic and loyal. It is a warm-hearted dog, attached to its family and good with children. It has a strong scenting instinct and a passion for hunting; once it picks up a trail, it is extremely determined. It has a loud, melodic voice and is prone to baying.

Care, Exercise and Training

Its short coat is easy to care for; the ears should be cleaned. It needs a great deal of exercise and scent stimulation; because of its strong prey drive, a secure, fenced area is a must. Its scent-driven nature calls for patient, reward-based training.

Health

It is generally very healthy and hardy. Hip dysplasia and ear infections may occur. Regular ear care and vet check-ups are recommended. The Treeing Walker Coonhound suits active owners looking for a friendly, determined and energetic hunting/activity dog who can provide plenty of exercise and space.

PatiBase tip: Keep all vaccines, check-ups and treatment history in a digital health record, and track vet appointments with reminders in the app.
